Teach English in JiAnghu Zhen - Maoming Shi
This unit deals with difficult grammar structures such as conditionals and reported speech. One of the most important things to know about conditionals is that it consists of two clauses. The \"if\" clause contains the condition that has to be satisfied before the action or the state in the main clause can be realized. There are five main conditionals, but the main difficulties occur with the second and the third conditionals. The Second Conditional expresses a present or future hypothetical situation that is presently not true and is unlikely ever to be true. The third conditional refers to a hypothetical past action and the hypothetical consequence. Since the \"action\" was purely hypothetical, the consequence was impossible. It is great that this unit has some teaching ideas for teaching conditionals like splitting sentences in half and mixing them up so that students have to put them back together again. Students can be given half a conditional and need to complete it with their own ideas. Students can take it also in turns to continue a conditional sentence or can be given some moral dilemmas in the conditional form to discuss, etc. Another important grammar topic that has been covered in this unit is reported speech and direct speech. It is important to know that some changes take place when we turn direct speech and indirect. For example, the form of the verb can change into the past form, quotation marks should be omitted, time expressions should also change, etc. The teaching ideas for this topic include role plays in groups of 3 where one student says a sentence which is then 'reported' to a third. Students can also devise their own media interviews (based on current events) that often report third parties speech. I think that this unit has been really useful in conveying teaching tips for these grammar structures that will help in my teaching practice.
