Unit 10 - CD/Video Lessons 1st video: The teacher in the first video looks generally unhappy for the entire lesson. Students are confused and intimidated in the first lesson. The students are not given a clear explanation of the lesson point (modal auxiliary verbs) so they find it hard to understand. Errors that the teacher made in the first lesson: ? Reading a book while the students completed their work. ? Not praising the students for their efforts when they attempted to answer questions. ? Scowling and looking generally unhappy for the entire lesson. ? Not attempting to explain concepts in a different manner when students didn?t understand. The teacher says the material is very easy and that anyone can do it. This makes the students feel reluctant to participate for fear of answering incorrectly. Students do not answer the teacher's questions because the teacher does not use examples of modal auxiliary verbs to show what he is looking for rather than expecting the students to instantly understand. 2nd video: The teacher has a positive and engaging attitude in the second lesson and the students respond with a high level of participation. The teacher?s voice is louder and more forceful in the second lesson. The teacher uses gestures and miming in the second lesson to help the students produce more vocabulary and to aid their understanding. Teacher learns the students? names and involves all of the students in the lesson. The teacher uses two prompting techniques - the use of drawings made by the teacher and pictures of vocabulary items. The teacher provides an example of the finished product in the second lesson. General conclusion: The attitude that the teacher comes into class with will have a profound effect on the success of the lesson. ?Students don?t care how much you know until they know how much you care.? (The famous saying)
