Teach English in Dong'an Zhen - Maoming Shi
The last unit of this course was a short reading with lots of general advice and tips for teaching. As always, I prefer the units about teaching (material I am familiar with). These units tend to give titles to teaching techniques I am aware of, or have used. I always gain confidence when I recognize teaching techniques I figured out myself, written in this program. The most useful teaching advice was for business English, the branch where I am least experienced and have the least confidence. This course has frequently covered grammar or objectively discussed a teaching technique, right as I encountered that grammar point, or had a teacher training session. I have been able to use jargon acquired from this course and impressed supervisors. This course has also taught me that many parts of English language that are natural for me (of course, this is my L1!) are actually a whole different grammatical point. Last weekend I was with a Japanese friend with a English level. I was showing her a cafe I like in Kyoto, she was amused that her American friend knew a cafe she didn?t. I used the phrase, ?Just a bit further down this street.? She asked, ?We have to walk farther?? Before this unit, I might not have noticed that, but, it led to an impromptu lesson where I explained the difference between ?further? and ?farther?. I still have much to learn about English grammar. While my speech and writing will be correct, I know that I have trouble categorizing and quantifying what grammar I am using. I signed up for this course to facilitate a career change. I learned more than I expected I would. I also have been reminded of how it feels to be a student. I have been delightfully surprised that I have been able to immediately apply my knowledge from this course to my current TEFL. I feel slight remorse that I did not take a course like this earlier in my career.
