If we compare the two demo classes, we can notice some major differences between them: 1st demo class - teacher does not use gestures and miming (he is not smiling) - teacher doesn?t know the students? names - teacher keeps repeating that everything is easy, yet students are still making mistakes - teacher starts the lesson with the question ?Give me modal auxiliary verbs ? You don?t know?? without giving the students examples and further explanation what kind of an answer he is expecting to get because there are many types of modal auxiliary verbs and he is looking for a specific type - during the worksheet activities, the teacher is sitting (or reading a book) - after checking the answers the teacher crumples the paper (with answers) - the teacher does not provide enough examples - students appear to be uninterested 2nd demo class: - better structure of the lesson (engage: greeting, names, game; study: eliciting, activities of matching, pronunciation drills, worksheets; activate: drawing and repeating what they have learnt) - teacher uses gestures and miming, is smiling - teacher provides students with many examples, gives clear instructions - teacher uses drawings and pictures; demonstration method - teacher uses pair-work as well - students participate From these two demo classes I?ve learnt what to do and what to avoid in order to have a good class. The teacher should always be enthusiastic, open to students, build rapport with them (know their names, treat them equally, etc.), give clear instructions, use simple language, provide many examples, ask if they understand, combine different social forms of classroom as well as different methods (audio-visual, demonstration, task-based, reading, writing, listening, discussion, etc.). On the other hand, the teacher should avoid being unapproachable and uninterested, creating predictable and dull lessons, etc.
