Reading and listening are equally important receptive skills yet our motives and reasons for listening and reading differ. They can be divided into two wide-range categories of reading and listening for a purpose and for entertainment, however our reasons for reading and listening might include them both. We use our mind to literally understand and process the words that we read and hear into the pre-existent knowledge since it allows us to grasp a true understanding of them. The ability to understand the context depends on various skills such as predictive skills, scanning, skimming, reading and listening in a concentrated manner, deducing the meaning of individual words or phrases from the context together with looking beyond the literal meaning of the word or the phrase. Listening may cause more issues than reading because reading allows the students to read the text countless times yet they hear the language only once and it might be not enough of time to deduce the meaning of it. Pre-teaching essential words before reading and listening ensures that students wouldn't encounter too many obstacles while learning unknown language and structures. A careful selection of authentic and non-authentic texts allows teacher to expose the students to texts that are designed for their abilities and to texts that build the confidence in their skills. However, teacher must be very considerate of the students and their interests while choosing material in order to be able to get them interested and motivated. Students should be interested in the topic before reading and listening begins so they would do it with real enthusiasm, therefore teacher should use a variety of material over a period of time to ensure that all the students are being equally catered for. Carefully selected material should also allow the students to practice different skills while chosen realistic comprehension tasks should aid understanding.
