This unit covered the topic of books and materials. It covered some of the pluses and minuses of \"authentic materials\" and \"created materials\". Authentic materials can be more interesting and motivating because they are real. Student can gain much confidence by being able to understand authentic materials as well. These materials can also be gathered to fit the interests of a specific group of students. In contrast, created materials are generally designed by the teacher to supplement or replace materials from the coursebook. They might not be as timely or topical, but they can be graded to the level of the students. Common created materials include: crosswords, word search puzzles, role-playing cards, flashcards, gap fill activities, and picture stories. Finally, course books (which generally consist of a student book, workbook, audio files/DVD/cassettes, teachers book, etc.) are a common and expected material for teaching. They are a proven, refined teaching material that guide the teacher as well as the students. Course books don't always fit the specific needs and interests of the class, but that can be solved by supplementing lessons with created materials.
