Teach English in Zhailong Zhen - Liuzhou Shi
I enjoyed this unit. We covered classroom arrangement, the behavior of the students and teachers, and grouping. I am particularly fond of separate tables in classroom arrangement (that are changed once per month) and classwork in these small groups or pairwork. It was interesting to read about the positives and negatives of my classroom choices, and to read about other options. I particularly enjoyed learning about TTT vs. STT. We already discussed this a bit during the ESA unit, but here we learned strategies to reduce our TTT, such as avoiding TEFL jargon, using gestures, pictures, or mimes, and using lower level language than what is being taught. This was very interesting to me, and I thought a lot about how much I typically talk in the classroom. I do occasionally use higher level language in an attempt to broaden the students vocabulary, and often provide several examples. I plan to focus much more in the future on how I can increase the students talk time and speaking confidence. I need to select students at random instead of moving in a regular pattern, and use the student's name at the end of the question. This will help to keep my students on their toes and attentive.
