Unit 4 discusses the different parts of learning a new language. We learn to teach vocabulary, language structures, and language functions. When teaching vocabulary, the teacher needs to be careful that he selects appropriate words. A teacher should consider the following criteria when selecting vocabulary: appropriateness to the students and task, frequency of use, and weather it is teachable. In the classroom, the teacher must consider the pronunciation and spelling of the word, the meaning, and how and when it is used. Teaching new language structures is often laid out in the teacher's handbook. The teacher needs to make sure he clearly explains the meaning of the structure, how and when it is used, how the different words affect each other, and how it is constructed. Language functions include activities such as inviting, agreeing, and suggesting. When teaching language functions, the teacher should spend much time in the activate stage as activities such as role-play are extremely useful to this learning. When teaching language functions the teacher should consider how often the students will use the functions and weather the functions are appropriate to the students.
