This unit has taught me primarily about the different roles a teacher may take on and their usage and effectiveness in the classroom. I personally find the 'Organizer' role among the most important listed, having negative learning experiences in the past where the teacher failed to perform well in this role. Paying students want to make the best of the time they have with the teacher, and in order to maximize the effectiveness of any given class it is imperative the teacher has planned sufficiently and able to organize the class accordingly. This includes paying attention to the time spent on any one given activity, while also allowing for reasonable distractions should the class be struggling particularly in any specific area. The second thing I learnt in this unit were some common differences between young and adult learners- primarily their preconceptions (or lack of) from past learning experiences which have the potential to affect their motivation. An interesting point also raised was that young learners are more likely to be able to grasp a language in context, as opposed to adults who may attempt to understand in terms of their native language, which can be problematic.
