During this lesson I watched 2 videos of the same teacher, and same students with different results. The first lesson is a disaster the teacher doesn't attempt to build rapport with the students. He keeps on mentioning how easy the lesson is which scares the students. The students are afraid of making a mistake, and they also are very uncomfortable. He doesn't warm the students up during the engage phase, and he also talks while he's writing on the board. He also doesn't allow the students to work in groups. The students do all of the work solo, and there isn't much student talk time. The second lesson is far more effective. He is more friendly and smiles more. The class is more relaxed. Before he starts class he introduces himself, and he has the students write their name on the desk. He also does a great job in the engage phase warming the students up. He uses pictures and mimes to elicit information from the students. One thing I learned from this lesson the teacher's attitude can make a big difference. A friendly teacher makes a more relaxed classroom environment. A teacher who is unfriendly will likely make students more nervous, and apprehensive to participate in class.
