This unit is based on teaching special groups. Five most common groups of English learners are distinguished: 1) beginners; 2) individuals; 3) young learners; 4) English for special purposes (Business English is the most popular here); 5) monolingual / multilingual classes. For effective teaching of a group of beginners, we should keep the instructions simple, be very supportive, not overuse correction, play a lot of interactive games, use choral work and drilling exercises, use as much visual aids as possible. Teaching individuals might have its pros and cons. At one to one classes there is only one student, hence, it is much easier to respond to his/her needs. But loss of classroom dynamics and tiredness might be one of the drawbacks. As stated in this unit, a lot of English teachers might lose their confidence when teaching business English. For me it is rather challenging too. I had some experience, both the students and I think the classes were effective, but lack of knowledge in the field of business made me feel uncomfortable. Now, I realize that this can actually be a plus! A teacher can let students explain everything about their job, encouraging them to speak English.
