In this unit, two lessons about the same subject (modal auxiliary verbs) are taught to the same class in two different ways in order to compare how the teacher's attitude affects the atmosphere in the classroom. In the first lesson video, the teacher is intimidating, does not smile, and does not appear to care about his students (reading a book while students work, not helping while they are doing worksheets, etc.). As a result, the students often avoid eye contact with the teacher and are reluctant to participate even if they may know the answers. In contrast, in the second lesson video the teacher is smiling, encouraging, and appears to care about the students (such as making sure he knows all their names and that they know his name). This time, the students are much more eager to participate, and they smile and laugh often in class. While the subject being taught is the same in both lessons, it was striking to see how the teacher's attitude has such a strong impact on the classroom. I learned that being a positive, encouraging teacher can go a long way towards building a better atmosphere in the classroom, which in turn can result in better retention of the materials being studied.
