Teach English in Qiaoban XiAng - Liuzhou Shi
This unit concerned pronunciation and phonology, as the title suggests, and covered intonation, stress, sound joining, linked speech, the phonemic alphabet, place of articulation, manner of articulation, and techniques for teaching these different subjects. Although I have had experience with identifying and analyzing stress because of my study of English Literature and Writing, I have had less experience with intonation, articulation, and the phonemic alphabet. For instance, I had encountered some basics concerning intonation, such as a the basic fact that rise/fall and fall/rise intonation exists, but I had never looked at it in this detail before. Articulation, both place of and manner of articulation, was completely new. I understood that different sounds required different movements in the mouth, but I never studied this subject. Likewise, I had encountered the phonemic alphabet in dictionaries and in classes, but I never invested the time into memorizing it. All in all, this unit contained a lot of new material. Naturally, I learned a lot by familiarizing myself with this unit and I plan upon continuing to review the material, so I can cement much of it into my long term memory.
