Pronunciation can be a challenge for students of English, especially ones with a native language that lacks similar sounds. I agree that pronunciation is important, especially in tonal languages such as Mandarin, however, I respectfully disagree that it needs to be taught consciously through error-correction. That approach can easily raise a student's affective filter and result in feelings of fear of making the mistakes that they will naturally make. In my own experience, the accuracy of my pronunciation of other languages, especially German, have been the result of lots and lots of comprehensible listening input. If I am having a conversation, it may not be the best thing to pause and force myself to make specific sounds that are difficult for me. The conversation has stopped entirely and frequent stops may be taxing on the native speaker. If I were to speak with an emphasis on communication then the objective of speaking a foreign language has been achieved. As a student of languages, I have not asked to be taught a course of linguistics. Some students will ask for this and should be accommodated but I feel that class time could be spent best with reading/listening and conversation.
