In unit 3 Theories, methods and techniques, I learn various methods and techniques in teaching. Students need to be motivated, be exposed to the language and have the opportunity to use it in order for teaching to be effective. The ESA- Engage, study and Activate method by Jeremy Harmer is very appropriate for trainee and new teachers. The Elicitation technique is an extremely useful component of the ESA process. This technique is used by teachers to get information about what students already know and need to know. There are many elicitation techniques for teachers to use appropriate for different language levels. To keep the learners motivated and interested in their learning, ideas for all three stages of the ESA phase must vary. The activities vary according to the language level and appropriateness. The Engage stage must keep the students engaged, the Study stage should provide controlled practice and the Activate stage should train the students in language fluency. Feedback in important as it encourages self-awareness and improvement. I learn correction techniques in oral and written work as well as how, what and when to give feedbacks in the three different stages of learning.
