I have not thought about what makes a good learner before this class. But the age, culture, and level, and motivation for studying play all play a big part in the make up of a learner. Young learners have shorter attention spans and would require singing and pictures in the classroom. Pre puberty learners will be unmotivated and unwilling to take risks in class. But the pre puberty learner is generally more receptive to learning the sounds that make up a new language. Young learners will com into the classroom with an open mind, unlike adults, who may have a history of learning experiences already. Also, adult learners are going to class because they are motivated but younger students usually don't have a choice which can lead to disinterest. It is the teachers job to present the material in an interesting manner to entice the learner. Adult learners have more life experience to share with the class and the classes can be more interesting and can connect better with the teacher. And on the other hand younger students will have an advantage because they can absorb the new language easier than adults. The older students run into problems when they try to match the new language to their own.
