Conditionals are sentences that use IF that tell possibilities using an if clause and a main clause. The if clause in sentences contain a condition which has to be met before the main clause happens or is realized. Various forms of conditions that may be tricky. It helps to practice these slowly so as not to confuse students. Zero conditional often talks about facts and actions that are proven like: When you exercise, you lose weight. First conditionals talk about an actual situation that happens in the future. If I get 75% on this test, I will do the final. Second conditional talks about hypothetical situations which are unlikely to actually happen. If I became a billionaire, I would retire. Third conditional talks about hypothetical actions in the past with a hypothetical past consequence. If I had studied hard, I would have passed with flying colors. Mixed conditionals may be used with 2nd and third clauses together If I had been a singer, I would be famous now. Direct and reported speech is also confusing due to the verb tense changes.
