This unit focuses on teaching productive skills in the classroom, otherwise known as speaking and writing. This section was ripe with examples and really goes into detail in explaining the ways you can teach these skills. For example, when approaching speaking skills it is important to keep the students motivated and employ techniques that encourage the students to speak, such as grouping or pairing the students up for a lesson. Something I learned a lot about in this section was the difference between fluency and accuracy activities. Generally speaking, accuracy activities occur during the study phase, with a concentration on students producing correct language. Fluency activities, however typically occur during the activate phase and aim to allow the students to experiment and explore the language with less of an emphasis on accuracy. I also learned a lot about teaching writing in a classroom and how important creative writing can be when teaching a new language. Like teaching speaking skills, writing needs to be encouraged and the students need to be interested in what they are writing. Creative writing engages the students and allows them to feel fulfilled when the writing is complete.
