This unit covered descriptions of Teachers and Learners. For example, the roles of teachers included managers, organizers, assessors, prompters, participants, tutors, facilitators, models and monitors. The qualities of good teachers were also discussed, including being kind and patient, having a love for teaching, creating classes that were lively and entertaining, having good subject knowledge, and having good rapport with students in the classes. Qualities of good learners were described as having a willingness to listen to the new language, desire to experiment with languages, willingness to ask questions, acceptance of error correction and a desire to learn. Also discussed in this unit were levels of learning languages, going from Beginner or Breakthrough, to Elementary or Waystage, to Pre-Intermediate or Threshold, to Intermediate or Vantage, to Upper Intermediary or Effective Operational Proficiency, to Advanced or Mastery level. Motivations for studying new languages included interest in new languages, communicating with colleagues or friends or partners who speak the new language, wanting to study or live in the country of the new language, and having future career prospects.
