Teach English in JiAngkou XiAng - Liuzhou Shi
The unit focuses on receptive skills : reading and listening. These two skills are in contrast with productive skills like speaking and writing. To create an engaging lesson focused on receptive skills, one should first get to know his students. If the topic is too uninteresting or of an inappropriate level, students will get bored. It is important to encourage using receptive skills even if the students can't understand everything in the presented material. Naturally, every class should still include some new vocabulary or grammar so that student gradually learn, while feeling their level improves. As a learner of Japanese, dealing with the fact you cannot understand everything in a text and still get the general idea was a major issue. This in turn ended up being one of the most difficult part of the JLPT : you have to read very fast without trying too hard to get the small details. I feel as a teacher, you have to make sure the students can read a complete article even if they don't understand everything. A time limit may be harsh but used sparsely I feel it may be a good tool to achieve that goal. They will realize they can get the point of a seemingly complex text, and feel empowered.
