Unit 7, Teaching New Language, provided distinct approaches on how to teach vocabulary, grammar and functions. The unit encouraged introduction to new language in a balanced way by pointing that each type of new language (vocabulary, grammar, functions)is complementary with the remaining two types. To illustrate this, grammar is compared to the tree trunk and branches, and vocabulary and functions represent the leaves of the tree that provide beauty and variety. There are four things that students need to do with new language: 1) be exposed to it; 2) understand its meaning; 3) understand how its constructed; and 4) be able to practice and produce it. I learned from this unit the importance of using valuable criteria on how to select vocabulary: 1)appropriacy to the students; 2) appropriacy to the task; 3) frequency and coverage; and 4) teachability. I would also like to thank the authors of this unit for providing so much detail on how to introduce the three types of new language and suggesting which forms of ESA may be best suited for introducing vocabulary, grammar or functions. Finally, it was helpful to be reminded of the importance of considering the student level when preparing a lesson.
