There is so much good stuff in this unit! I was particularly fascinated by how mistakes are distinguished from errors. As someone who prides himself on setting up teaching situations where students receive meaningful feedback in a timely way, I think this unit has made me realize, sometimes I confound the two (or at least act as if they are the same). As a science teacher, this happens both with vocabulary and concepts, and this unit has made me realize that I had better ensure I know whether a student is making a mistake or an error before I determine how they should receive feedback. As far as the lesson construction part of this unit, I realize that I have been an instinctual ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) teacher for my entire career, mostly with patchworks of my own construction. What I do like, however, is the fact that this has given me language to speak with other ESOL teachers about my practices. I am also thankful for the variety of ideas that you have provided for engaging students. These are largely good practices for any content where there is significant lexical development, whether it is a truly foreign language (i.e. English) or one that just seems foreign to students (science).
