This unit explores the different materials that can be used in the classroom. These include authentic materials, which are anything that can be read, listened to etc in every day life. These include menus, recorded interviews, maps etc. The unit explores the advantages and disadvantages for each category. In the case of authentic materials an advantage would be that students can gain confidence and motivation because they can understand something a native speaker would use. A disadvantage can be that authentic materials can be less appropriate for beginner classes, and need to be chosen carefully. The unit also looks at created materials, i.e. activities etc that the teacher creates. These can be very useful as they can target a specific area, or a known weakness of the students. We continue to look at course books, and a few of the advantages and disadvantages are explored. A course book can be a helpful resource in the classroom, but should not be relied upon to the exclusion of all else. It should be adapted, supplemented etc to better target the students needs. In this unit I have learnt more about the different materials available to me as a teacher, and how to use them in an efficient way.
