Teach English in Dongqi XiAng - Liuzhou Shi
I agreed with the textbook where it said that one of the best ways to improve writing fluency and accuracy is to encourage extensive reading. We can learn a lot of vocabulary, grammar, and language in a classroom. That being said, I think there is a limit to how much can be absorbed by speaking a lot, hearing lectures and reading short sections in practice worksheets. Ultimately, students need to have individual reading time ideally of a wide variety of subjects. Dr. Day suggests that for extensive reading students should ideally read materials that are i - 1. This takes from Krashen's i + 1 concept in which we are exposed to a little more than our ability. Dr. Day suggests that for ER (extensive reading) we want the materials to be easy. As in, students should be able to recognize 99% or even 100% of the words/grammar used in the text. One way to help this is to have the teacher assist the students by going over difficult vocabulary. Getting the students to enjoy reading is really the only big challenge in using ER in the classroom that I have found. Once they enjoy a subject matter or a story and feel they \"get it,\" they will start to read even when you don't ask them too in their spare time.
