Unit 20 Troubleshooting Unit 20 offers ideas and solutions to deal with common problem situations. When teaching a new class it is important to establish rapport with and between the students first, before diving into the course book and grammar exercises. When faced with a group of students with different levels of English language ability there are a number of options: 1) Use different materials suited to each level 2) Use the same materials, but assign different tasks 3) Don't do anything and let students find their own level within the class 4) Pair stronger students with weaker ones When teaching a large class (>30) it works well to use a lot of worksheets and do pair and group work. To avoid/limit the use of students' native langage in class in monolingual classes the teacher should only ever respond in English and encourage students to communicate in English. The teacher should also make sure that all activities are explained clearly and understood by all so that students do not have to explain to each other what they are expected to do in their native language. I have learned a lot from this course and look forward to putting all that I've learned into practice.
