Receptive skills are very important in language learning, students' ability to master these skills would determine their level of comprehension when encountering the language in everyday situations. Covering vocabulary and grammar that students are likely to need on a daily basis is often a practical requirement for students to gain a functional usage of the language. While students are not required to understand every word in every encounter with the language that they have, in order to have some level of comprehension, the core vocabulary that they learn will form the basis for their assimilation of other more difficult vocabulary and grammatical structures. Listening comprehension is often more difficult than reading comprehension because students can review the reading material several times and deduce the meaning of words however listening materials do not give this luxury of time and students must be able to recognize words and recall their meanings at the time that they are heard. This requires considerable practice, more than can be given in class.
