Unit 10 shows us a video of two ESA English lessons. The content of both lessons is the same. However, the first lesson didn?t go well at all, while the second lesson was an effectively taught ESA lesson. It was eye opening and useful to see the immense difference between lesson 1 and lesson 2. In lesson 1 the students were not engaged at all and didn?t dare speak up. Lesson 2 was a pleasant lesson where the students seemed to feel comfortable and participated actively. The first and most important difference between lesson 1 and lesson 2 was the attitude and behaviour of the teacher. In lesson 1 he was irritated, unfriendly, impatient and didn?t explain anything or answered students questions. In lesson 2 the teacher was engaging, he smiled and made an effort to learn the students? names and make them feel comfortable. Lesson 2 was also much more structured than lesson 1 and clearly followed the ESA pattern. The teacher managed to involve all students and he gave feedback in a positive way. Overall, I think lesson 2 could have been even more effective if there was more time for the activate phase and/or an additional activate activity to further increase student talk time.
