Receptive skills are something I had trouble teaching to my students. The material used for developing these skills must be in accordance with the student's level as something that's above their level might startled them whereas something that's below their level won't catch their attention. The material should also be chosen according to the possible interests, age, culture, of the students. It is important that the teacher gives proper instructions on what the aim of the reading/listening session is in order for the students to know what specialist skills their must use. Most English teachers let the students listen to audio documents several times so as to give them a chance to understand a few words they missed and build their confidence which I think could be effective if it doesn't take too much time. I find it rather difficult to get the learners to transfert their receptive skills into their productive skills. For exemple, learners would often understand a text but would struggle expressing thoughts on it or review it with their own words.
