I feel Unit 14 serves as a good basis on the utility of course books and materials and the pros and cons with their use in the classroom. From my own experience as ex-language student, previous teaching experience and material provided by the the TEFL course, I believe that a well planned and efficient EFL lesson, in terms of course books and lesson material used, is: 1. Adapted to the level and interest of the students. 2. Essentially composed of a good mix of authentic material, course books and created materials (by the teacher specifically adapted to the student?s level). 3. Has to be interesting, so as to motivate students to learn and engage them into conversing and practicing the language. For i.e ? With role play during the Activate stage of a lesson, and gap fills exercises in the study stage. 4. The teacher should carefully select the topics of study and the created materials that will be supplementing the course books lesson, for example such as crosswords, flash cards or picture stories (as seen and suggested in unit 14).
