In this unit, I learned that there are three primary ways of assessing students' language levels: tutorials, evaluation by the students themselves, and tests. While evaluation of the course by the students is an excellent way of promoting interaction and helping the teacher better understand how the students feel about the class, tests are also very useful and quite common. There are different types of tests: placement and diagnostic tests that help measure new students' proficiency with the language prior to beginning an EFL course; progress tests given periodically throughout the course to measure the language that students have retained or forgotten; and practice tests that help prepare students for a number of possible external examinations proctored by organizations outside the classroom. Such examinations emphasize different skills or are designed for different countries' requirements, and include the TOEFL, the IELTS, the TOEIC, different Cambridge Assessment tests, and business English tests, though there are many more tests outside of these.
