Having assisted in TESOL classes before I was aware of many of these techniques, but not the depths of their particular meanings or methodology. In my experience, the ESA style of teaching seems to be the most effective as long as games are used to help make learning fun for the students. This is because they enter the classroom after only speaking their native language all day, and it can be difficult to go right into English education for many. The Engage activities at the beginning additionally help to create a more fun learning environment where not only is everyone participating (hopefully), but they are also thinking in English while preparing their minds to work in English for the remainder of the class period. The study stage then allows them to learn the new material after warming up, and the activate stage allows them to potentially use what they just learned. The brain is just like the muscles of the body, and should therefore be warmed up before using. The ESA technique understand this idea, and thus, in my opinion, is the best technique.
