This unit covered the different ways that a teacher can evaluate the English level of their class and the reasons for keeping track of the progress the class is making. There are a variety of ways to evaluate a class including testing, in class interactions, one on one tutoring, and many others and it is up to the teacher to determine the best ways to use the information gained from these evaluations. A test will give empirical data for how a student is performing, but it won't reflect their in class attitude and performance. Testing can come in many forms depending on what the teacher or students needs. A placement test or a diagnostic test will allow a teacher to see what level the students are performing at. A progress test will test how well a student is keeping up with the lessons. A practice test will allow a student to prepare for other tests including ones they will take outside of class such as the TOEFL. Students might take external tests in order to get certified on their knowledge of English to work or move somewhere where English is used.
