In many ways writing is the most neglected skill because teachers do not necessarily want their lessons being conducted in quiet time when the students are writing. It should not be ignored, however, because it is arguably more difficult than speaking as a greater degree of accuracy is required. When communicating, people are certain to be doing so for the following reasons 1)they have a communicative purpose, 2) they want to say something 3) they want to listen to something and 4) they are interested in what is being said. Accuracy activities are usually conducted in the study phase of the lesson and typically concentrate on producing correct language, whereas fluency activities are usually conducted in the activate phase of the lesson and concentrate allowing students to be creative and experiment with the language. Many students can be reluctant to speak in a classroom for the following reasons: lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, peer intimidation, lack of interest in the topic, previous learning experiences and for cultural reasons.
