In Unit 12 the productive skills, speaking and writing, are discussed. I understand that both accuracy and fluency are equally important. Teaching accuracy should be carried out during the Study phase and concentrate on producing correct language whereas allowing the students to practice their fluency during the Activate stage would allow for mistakes and is stressed that it is more effective to allow the student to be creative with the language than to be correct. Writing is the least taught skill when teaching ESL and seemingly the hardest to do so. It is important for the teacher to encourage creative writing, to allow for students to have their own personal handwriting and to encourage students to always improve upon it. Doing exercises to discover spelling rules and extensive reading will help with spelling. Games are always a good way to keep students interested and engaged to learn and must always appeal to the students personal interests and be fun. Games provide useful controlled practice for learning different aspects of the English language.
