This unit covered different issues regarding course books and materials. In general, materials can be divided into authentic materials and created materials and each have their advantages and disadvantages in the classroom. Authentic materials tend to be more interesting and can provide confidence in students when they understand them as they are essentially real-world or ?true? examples. These include newspapers, songs, menus, etc. On the other hand, created materials allow for greater creativity and can be more easily used for grading the language level of students. Examples of created materials include word search puzzles and role-playing cards. The use of course books also has its pros and cons and all in all, it?s important to consider what is relevant to the students. For the best use of course books, teachers can omit certain things if needed or replace with more relevant material. Moreover, teachers can supplement the course book with other ideas and activities, and also adjust/adapt the material to fit the students? needs.
