Teaching new language involves teaching: new vocabulary, grammatical structures, and language functions. It is important to consider which vocabulary to teach, according to how relevant it is to the students and to what is already being studied in class. Students need to be engaged with the vocabulary initially, then taught and given the opportunity to study the words in a fill-in exercise, matching, or crossword, then given the opportunity to activate their knowledge of the words by using them in a more natural setting, such as a role-play or story. When teaching grammatical structures, lessons can begin with a discussion, pictures, or question and answer session. Then the students can study the structures with drilling, sentence building, or word order activities. To activate their knowledge of grammatical structures, students can role-play or discuss. Functions of language are things such as: inviting, agreeing, refusing, and suggesting. Students need to learn the terms of the language as well, whether it is a formal, informal, or technical setting.
