This unit concerned evaluation and discussed the different forms of evaluation (tutorials, student evaluations, and tests), the different types of testing used in the classroom (placement, diagnostic, progress, practice, and achievement) and the motivations behind each, and the different types of common external assessments. There were also sample materials for a placement test included in this unit. This is another area in teaching that I am completely unfamiliar with. My limited, informal teaching experience did not include testing or evaluation. I had the opportunity of observing teachers implement evaluation, but I never constructed and oversaw any sort of testing myself. My experience with evaluation and testing has been as student rather than as teacher. This unit, therefore, was very instructive. The most valuable piece of information for me was the distinction between the different forms of testing and evaluation. It helped me envision how testing is incorporated into the school year, where and when it is done in the year, and through what means.
