There are so many pitfalls in English pronunciation! I never give up on the subject persistently giving different exercises and activities. At times it seems to me that some newcomers hear about dropped sounds/connected spech/voiced endings for the first time in their lives despite the fact many of them have had at least six years of English lessons in secondary school. So, I'm sure they take me as an awful bore for all my asking to listen and repeat again and again. I find really helpful to use at lessons as many authentic listening materials as possible. Singing songs may also be helpful to get the idea of connected speech. From my experience I can say that (as a rule) the younger the learner the easier and more naturally they pick up English intonation and pronunciation, they even can be very enthusiastic about exaggerated intonation (we often read dialogues in such a way). Adult learners are prone to think that there are a lot of much more important tasks ahead of them, but as soon as they taste the joy of real English speech, nothing will stop them.
