This unit covers the topic of lesson materials. They could be divided into authentic materials and created materials. Authentic materials includes anything a native speaker would come across in real life, such as newspapers, magazines and radio shows. These are real and therefore more interesting to students, and can give students a sense of pride when they have understood them. The disadvantage of authentic materials would be that they are not graded to level so a teacher must carefully select them before using them in class. Created materials are easier for use because they would be graded to level and can supplement a course book. Course books are useful in the classroom because they are expected by students, and can provide a syllabus for continual progress. The downside of using course books will be that it could become predictable, and the overuse of them would make the lesson boring, and the teacher could become lazy when relying on course books, as he/she will be less inclined to create material of his/her own to adapt to the needs of the students.
