This unit covers the different areas of what a teacher needs to teach to an English student. A teacher usually have to teach in 3 main areas: vocabulary, grammar and functions. Teaching vocabulary is important as students would be motivated by learning new words so they can get by using the new language. In a vocabulary lesson, the meaning, usage, grammar, interaction with other words, spelling and pronunciation need to be taught, and a straight-arrow ESA lesson is usually used to teach a vocabulary lesson. Teaching grammatical structure is important because grammar is the tree trunk and branches of a language and students need to know it to effectively use the language. A boomerang or patchwork lesson is suitable in this case, and the usage, meaning, forms and patterns, and the spoken and written form can be taught. To teach language functions, a patchwork ESA lesson is the most suitable. Language functions includes inviting, refusing, suggesting, agreeing, disagreeing, etc. Role-plays would be suitable for the activate stage of language function lessons.
