Unit 14 presented an interesting discussion of class materials - Authentic, Course Book and Created. It goes without saying that understanding authentic materials are the goal of learning English. However to reach that level of comprehension, it is best that the students be taken step by step through the process of interpreting them. Course book materials should not be underestimated. They are usually the work of trained professionals and correspond to the content of the study contained in the textbook. Created materials are important because they give the teacher pause to think about how to integrate all of the different student needs into the class. Authentic materials are created on many different levels. An important note should be made to understand the reasons a certain type of English language is used. If students are learning English, they may be planning on working or living in an English speaking country. Documents such as visas, entry papers, work papers, airline tickets, vaccination and medical records should also be included in their education.
