This unit discussed typical problem situations in the classroom. The first lesson may find the teacher meeting a group of students who already know each other, or a group who are completely new. In both cases, it will be necessary to build rapport with the students, find out their interests and motivations and their English needs. Questions, surveys and games can achieve this. Similarly, warmer activities can help at the start of a lesson to provide inspiration and motivation. Students may have a variety of different levels, and ways to deal with this include splitting the class in two, giving stronger students different tasks, pairing up strong and weak students or doing nothing. Large classes require the use of worksheets, choral repetition, clear voice and board work and the use of pair work. Students should be encouraged to use English wherever possible rather than their native language, and teachers can foster this by only responding to English. Some students may be reluctant to participate, and may respond to role-plays, controlled practice or pair work.
