When developing receptive skills, it is important to note that both listening and reading are equally important. However, receptive skills do not end there, we must use our minds (our understanding) to be able to understand and apply what we have listened to or read. For the English learner, it can be more difficult to fully grasp what someone is trying to say solely through listening. Reading assists comprehension because the vocabulary can be visualized. It is important also to attempt to teach those things which interests one's students. You are more likely to garner a student's attention and enthusiasm for language learning when the student is presented with a topic of interest.
