Grammar is one of the most difficult parts of the English language to teach, especially as a native English speaker because we often go by what sounds correct rather than fully understanding the reasoning behind it. Certain rules, like adjective or adverb placement, may not be set in stone, but understanding sentence flow comes with time. Breaking down each part of a sentence and taking students through the various parts of speech is a great way to get started, especially because students are able to put information into real-world context and understand how elements are working together. Unfortunately, with exceptions and irregularities, though, students will just have to memorize.
