I feel that course books can provide structure and a vision of progression, however they should only be seen as a tool instead of the entire toolbox. They can be useful for independent practice outside of class. Authentic resources can be quite helpful tools as well, as long as they can be made comprehensible. I agree with the question above that they are not suitable for beginners. I would venture as far as to say that they are best suited to advanced learners who have a strong foundation of a wide range of structures, prepositions, idioms, and verbs. As learners are not the target audience, I feel that authentic resources should be used wisely as every class is a multi-level class.
