Unit 11 explained that there are four skills used when learning a language, and explained the two receptive skills, reading and listening, and effective ways to teach them. The unit explained that one uses receptive skills for a purpose or for pleasure, and that when reading and listening to different materials one is activating different parts of those skills, like specific-information scanning, general-information skimming, and deduction from content. I think the most important thing I learned during this unit is that one needs to be aware that reading and listening use more than just our eyes and ears, but our minds based upon our existing knowledge of the context of the language.
