In this lesson, I learned about the receptive language skills ? reading and listening, as opposed to the productive skills of speaking and writing. Reading can be done for a purpose, or for entertainment. When teaching reading or listening, it is helpful to select texts of an appropriate difficulty level for the students and on a variety of topics that will hopefully interest them. A useful strategy to help students comprehend a section of text or audio is to teach them some of the more difficult vocabulary items in the section before exposing them to it in its entirety. Using a fun and interesting engage stage can help motivate the students to read about or listen to the topic.
