In unit 3, I learned about the different teaching methods that may be used while teaching English. Although there are many different approaches that fall along the Nature/Nurture scale, I believe Jeremy Harmer's ESA model is the best foreign language teaching model because it incorporates positive attributes from all the other teaching models. Engage, Study and Activate can be beneficial since it uses different methods that encourage quick and long term learning. For example, the engage stage stimulates students by allowing them to think and speak in a warm environment. The study phase then incorporates a variety of exercises that help to improve the students understanding of the language such as elicitation, pronunciation and word order. Finally, the activate phase gives students the opportunity to take a break from the more rigid study phase and a chance to engage in communicative practice be engaging in role play or surveys where the focus is more on fluency than accuracy. Thus, the ESA model incorporates many of the ways research has demonstrated a propensity to learn a foreign language. Additionally, there are several activities and lesson patterns that can be used that make ESA fun and exciting.
