Unit 12: Teaching productive skills includes speaking and writing. Writing skills are more often neglected, thus making it hard for students to learn. Class time is typical focused on speaking. The teacher is also available to help the students before, during, and after class. Writing skills tend to be given as homework without real time guidance. In developing speaking skills, accuracy and fluency are equally important. Accuracy based activities should be used during the study phase. Fluency activities are better suited for the activate stage. Teacher should encourage students who may be hesitant to speak. This can be done by using pair or group work, careful planning, changing of the classroom dynamic, and plenty of controlled and guided practice. Writing skills consist of penmanship, spelling, grammar, layout, and punctuation. Creative writing tasks can be intimidating. The teacher needs to encourage their students especially if tasks are being done individually. Creative writing tasks include, poetry, stories and plays. Games help make the learning process easier to digest. They change the dynamic so students are more comfortable. In summary, having an engaging topic is key to any learning process.
