One of the most difficult activities for me is lesson planning. As said in the chapter, you should include stage, timing, and phase. The most difficult phases for my students are Engage and Activate. They are quite used to study lessons but have never experienced an engage phase in English. I plan for 5 or 7 minutes tops for the engage phase, similar to the lesson, and it always takes at least 15 minutes. They refuse to let English come out of their mouth even if they understand it. Also, in the example lesson plans they encourage you to start with engage to get the students minds going. But my best lessons are when I start with study and play games for the whole class. They love competing and getting energized. In a class of 43 students, all boys, at a technical high school, I am often left frustrated at their lack of effort to speak English and their insistence of spending all their effort chatting to each other in Japanese. My anticipated problems with my students for lesson planning are always the same and the only solution I've found is to not force them to produce anything. I am also only an ALT and do not have the cooperation of the Japanese teacher to include English production in her lesson plans.
